The MLB, MLB Advanced Media and MLB Players Association have agreed to work together to develop a stadium plan to replace Marlins Park in Miami, the teams announced Wednesday.
The deal will be finalized after the teams’ preseason games on Thursday.
“The baseball community is in awe of our collaboration and appreciation for the work and dedication that the MLB, Major League Baseball Players Association and MLB Advanced Services have done to bring this project to life,” Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement.
The deal calls for the teams to work out a contract extension, with MLBAM agreeing to be the new owner of Marlins Park for two more years. “
Major League Baseball is committed to making this stadium plan a reality, and it is clear that Major League baseball will have no choice but to work with the Marlins to make this vision a reality.”
The deal calls for the teams to work out a contract extension, with MLBAM agreeing to be the new owner of Marlins Park for two more years.
“MLB Advanced Media will have full ownership of the Marlins, and Major League MLB and MLBPA will jointly manage the stadium project for the next two years,” the deal says.
The teams are expected to announce their new ownership partners in early January.
The Marlins were purchased in 2010 by a consortium led by a group led by Disney.
They have been struggling financially since then, and a proposed new stadium was not approved in the Legislature.
MLBAM has made it clear it is interested in buying the Marlins for a price that is comparable to the Marlins’ current market value.
The team’s lease expires in 2021.
MLB has not announced how much it has offered for the team.
